Research training

[edit] Introduction
Advocacy funds support business member organisations (BMOs) to engage in private public dialogue and to advocate an improved business environment. Typically, grants are provided to support proposals which most closely meet the Fund’s criteria and objectives and which are regarded as having the best chance of making an impact. This financial support is complemented by personalised coaching, and a range of training programmes for organisational capacity building. No matter how good is a proposal for changes to public policy, it needs to be supported by sound evidence.
The aim of this session is to introduce concepts of research and how to use objective evidence to build a compelling case for policy change. As Louis Pasteur observed, ‘fortune favours the prepared mind’, so ensure that you are well prepared.
By the end of this session you will:
- Be aware of the need for primary and secondary research;
- Be able to quantify the impact of an issue on the private sector and on the public sector;
- Understand the need to consider the unintended consequences of a public policy;
- Be able to prepare public policy proposals built on the research evidence;
- Be able to commission experts to undertake research for you.
